Crafted by Culture and Design:A Journey Through Luxurious Resort Design in Boa Vista

My journey to Boa Vista, a stunning island in Cape Verde, became far more than a tropical escape—it was a profound immersion into a vibrant cultural and natural landscape. Initially drawn by a desire to explore communal design spaces, I found myself captivated by the island’s rich history, shaped by both African roots and Portuguese colonization. Staying at the Riu Touareg Resort, a palatial yet culturally grounded 5-star retreat, deepened my appreciation for the island’s authenticity. Unlike the minimalist Western ideals of luxury, the resort embraced bold patterns, earthy textures, and a tactile warmth that reflected the Creole heritage of the region. From the lush gardens and striking architecture to the mesmerizing blues of the Atlantic Ocean, Boa Vista revealed itself as a place where hospitality, tradition, and beauty converge—inviting every guest not just to visit, but to connect.

Meet Magdalena Gruszczynska: Founder and Creative Director of Supremati Interior Design Studio

At Supremati, a high-end interior design studio based in London, our passion for creating exquisite interiors is driven by the visionary leadership of our founder and creative director, Magdalena Gruszczynska. With over 15 years of experience in residential, commercial, and yacht design, Magdalena's journey is a testament to her dedication and creativity in the world of luxury interiors.

A Journey Through Prestigious Design Studios

Magdalena's impressive portfolio includes collaborations with some of the most esteemed design firms in London, the Netherlands, and Poland. She has worked with iconic names such as The Studio at Harrods, March & White, Lawson Robb, Wimberly Interiors, and Sinot Yacht Design. Her formal education at the renowned Chelsea College of Arts laid the foundation for her illustrious career.

A Collector’s Approach to Design

Magdalena describes her design philosophy as a "collector's style," where thoughtfully curated selections of art, furniture, design elements, and greenery come together to create harmonious living spaces. Her approach is rooted in meticulous attention to detail and a deep appreciation for well-developed layouts.

Her inspirations are drawn from the architecture of the building and its location, as well as her clients’ personal stories, passions, and cherished possessions. This collaborative process ensures that each project is a unique reflection of the client’s lifestyle and tastes.

Early Influences and a Passion for Design

Growing up in the historic town of Szydlowiec, Poland, Magdalena was surrounded by architectural beauty and artistic expression. The town's Gothic church and Renaissance castle left a lasting impression on her. Her mother and grandmother, both passionate about interior design, further nurtured her love for beautiful spaces.

"My mother loved redecorating our flat, and my grandmother had a passion for bold colors and patterns," Magdalena recalls. "As a child, I didn’t understand their constant desire for change, but now I find myself doing the same. It’s about continuously challenging the space you live in to make it more functional and aligned with your mood and lifestyle."

Expertise and Innovation

Magdalena’s expertise spans concept design, technical execution, and bespoke service delivery. Her ability to seamlessly integrate natural materials like stone, wood, and metals with innovative, sustainable materials such as REPREVE recycled yarn and "Really" textile products sets her apart in the design world.

"I believe in creating spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional and sustainable," she explains. "It’s crucial to design layouts that reflect how clients live and interact with each other, with a strong emphasis on symmetry, harmony, and order."

Building Strong Client Relationships

Magdalena's unwavering commitment to excellence has earned her a loyal clientele, many of whom repeatedly collaborate with her on subsequent projects. Her ability to visualize designs and manage budgets has made her a trusted partner for high-end interior design projects.

"Open communication is essential," Magdalena emphasizes. "Understanding clients’ budgets and agreeing on the scope of work ensures a smooth design process and successful project delivery."

A Vision Realized

Founding Supremati was a natural progression for Magdalena. "Being independent and fully responsible for my work feels natural to me," she shares. "Working for other companies doesn’t always guarantee financial security. Establishing my own studio allows me to take control of my projects and build meaningful relationships with clients."

Magdalena's journey from working with top design firms to establishing her own studio reflects her passion, resilience, and commitment to delivering exceptional design solutions.

Explore the Fisherman Hut Project: A Coastal Design Masterpiece by Supremati Interior Design Studio

At Supremati, a high-end interior design studio based in London, we pride ourselves on transforming spaces into exceptional living experiences. Our recent endeavour, the Fisherman Hut Project in Poland, showcases our expertise in designing extraordinary seafront interiors for discerning international clients specializing in coastal construction and restoration.

A Seamless Fusion of History and Modern Elegance

Nestled in a listed fisherman's hut dating back to 1920, the Fisherman Hut Project offers a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary sophistication. Strategically situated by the sea in a conservation area, this up-and-coming location is rapidly becoming a sought-after destination, with a vibrant landscape of new restaurants, spas, and hotels emerging nearby.

Tailored Design for Coastal Living

Supremati was entrusted with not only conceptualizing the design but also reimagining the interior layout and decoration of the apartments within the historic structure. Our objective was to create versatile spaces ideal for short-term rentals and holiday stays while respecting the coastal ambiance and preserving the essence of the original fisherman's hut design.

Thoughtful Design Elements Inspired by Nature

To bring this vision to life, our studio skillfully incorporated a variety of textures and patterns that reflect the natural beauty of the coastal environment. Key design features include:

  • Creative Tiling: Unique patterns that evoke the fluidity of ocean waves.

  • Jute Ropes: Nautical elements that add an authentic coastal touch.

  • Reclaimed Timber: Locally sourced wood used for flooring and joinery, celebrating sustainability and craftsmanship.

  • Natural Color Palette: Shades inspired by the sea and sand, including serene blues, calming greens, and neutral beige tones.

Experience Coastal Tranquility

The Fisherman Hut Project stands as a testament to our dedication to creating living spaces that capture the essence of their surroundings. Every detail has been thoughtfully curated to evoke a sense of tranquility, allowing residents and guests to immerse themselves in a harmonious environment where nature meets design.

If you’re seeking expert interior design services that seamlessly blend history, elegance, and functionality, Supremati is your trusted partner. Our bespoke approach ensures that every project we undertake is a reflection of timeless beauty and meticulous craftsmanship.

Supremati Interior Design: Effortlesselegance, where style meets comfort

We are truly honored by the article on Supremati featured in The Guardian's The Good Life Magazine. Please take a moment to read the full piece below.

Under the visionary leadership of Magdalena Gruszczynska, founder and creative director, Supremati crafts interiors that are as refined as they are deeply personal.

With more than 20 years of expertise spanning residential, commercial and yacht design, Magdalena has cultivated a reputation for sophisticated, bespoke interiors that embody

elegance and individuality.

A legacy of excellence

Magdalena’s journey has been shaped by collaborations with London’s most esteemed design studios, including The Studio at Harrods, March & White, Lawson Robb, Wimberly

Interiors and Sinot Yacht Design. Her formal training at the Chelsea College of Arts provided a foundation for the meticulous craftsmanship and visionary approach that define her

work today.

The collector’s eye: a truly distinctive approach

At the core of Supremati’s philosophy is a deeply curated approach to design. Magdalena believes that interiors should not only reflect a client’s lifestyle, but also serve as an extension of their personal collections, travels and heritage. Many of her clients own grade - I and grade II-listed homes in Mayfair, Belgravia and Regent’s Park, where historical integrity must be delicately balanced with modern refinement. Her expertise ensures that each space remains true to its architectural heritage while evolving into a sophisticated,

liveable work of art.

Beyond London, she’s designed contemporary villas in the Middle East and India, where diverse cultural influences are seamlessly integrated into grand, modern settings. With a

keen appreciation for fine art and rare antiques, she curates interiors that are both timeless and deeply personal. Her most recent project — a listed Belgravia townhouse — was designed to provide a striking yet harmonious backdrop for a private art and antique collection.

By blending timeless design, exquisite materials and an unerring eye for detail, the team create interiors that are both visually striking and deeply personal. Supremati Interior Design continues to redefine the landscape of luxury interiors, crafting extraordinary spaces that stand the test of time.

Sustainable interiors

Sustainable Interior Design: Balancing Luxury with Responsibility

At our London-based luxury interior design studio, we believe that exceptional design is not just about aesthetics but also about making responsible choices that have a positive impact on the environment. In the words of the legendary interior designer Billy Baldwin: “Quality matters! If you have the choice to buy one high-quality piece, versus several lesser-quality pieces, choose the former.” This philosophy aligns perfectly with our commitment to creating timeless interiors that prioritise quality, individuality, and sustainability.

Challenges in Sustainable Design

The interior design industry faces several challenges when it comes to adopting sustainable practices. One of the primary hurdles is the additional time and workforce required to work with preloved furniture and vintage materials. Customising and restoring these pieces can be labour-intensive, often requiring skilled artisans and extended timelines.

Additionally, many clients naturally prioritise aesthetics and budget over sustainability. While they may initially resist eco-friendly solutions, part of our role as designers is to educate them on the long-term benefits of sustainable choices—both for the environment and their well-being.

Incorporating Sustainable Practices

At our studio, we consistently encourage residential clients to repurpose existing furniture, rugs, artwork, and accessories when they can be seamlessly integrated into the design concept. This approach not only preserves sentimental items but also reduces waste. We often recommend sourcing antique décor, vintage furniture, recycled wood flooring, and sustainable fabrics to add character and eco-conscious elements to our projects.

One of our most impactful commercial office projects highlighted the value of sustainable design. While the initial concept leaned towards a more conventional aesthetic, we collaborated closely with the client to preserve existing features such as timber flooring, concrete ceilings, steel beams, and concrete brick walls. This approach not only enriched the office's atmosphere with a raw, authentic charm but also demonstrated how thoughtful, sustainable choices can elevate a project and set it apart.

Advocating for Responsible Recycling

Another way we champion sustainability is by advocating for the responsible recycling of unwanted items. We encourage clients to donate their surplus furnishings to local charities or consider auctioning them. By instilling the importance of recycling and repurposing in our process, we help foster a culture of mindful consumption.

The Business Case for Sustainability

Sustainability is no longer a niche concern but a crucial aspect of business strategy. Companies that embrace sustainable practices not only gain credibility but also build consumer loyalty. Sustainable design inspires innovation, leading to new approaches and techniques that improve business strategies and attract investors and talent.

Moreover, sustainable choices can reduce costs over time and help remodel a brand’s image, reinforcing its reputation as a forward-thinking, socially responsible entity. For our studio, sustainability is more than a trend—it is a commitment to creating beautiful, enduring spaces that honour both the client’s vision and the environment.

Final Thoughts

As Billy Baldwin wisely noted, “Decorators should never insist on throwing out everything the client has. Even when they are far from perfect, loved possessions add personality.” This belief resonates deeply with our approach to design. By blending timeless luxury with sustainable practices, we create bespoke interiors that not only look stunning but also tell a meaningful story—one that respects both the client and the planet.

The future’s green: balancing luxury property and sustainability

‘‘In order to achieve a more sustainable approach to luxury property, the sector is having to make some significant shifts in order to even begin to make an impact. The built environment is responsible for 40% of global emissions and in super-prime property, the stakes are potentially even higher, as historically, the expectations of UHNWIs haven’t always gone hand-in-hand with eco-friendly choices.

The good news is that attitudes across the board are shifting, with almost two-thirds of UHNWIs attempting to reduce their carbon footprint, according to the attitudes survey in the Knight Frank Wealth Report 2024. Though there is, of course, an expectation when it comes to luxury property that sustainable alternatives must meet or even exceed conventional standards.

All areas of the luxury property sector are becoming expert at balancing design excellence with eco-consciousness. Creative reuse of materials, the integration of renewable energy sources and the adoption of efficient, eco-friendly technologies are redefining luxury. What’s also heartening to see, is that companies are not working in isolation, but looking for ways to collaborate and share knowledge to both hold each other to account and together strive to do better.

To discuss this fascinating topic, we reached out to a broad spectrum of our members, drawn from the fields of architecture, interior design, real estate, property surveying, technology, branding, project management, manufacturing and law.  So, please join The Luxury Property Forum and our experts as we take an in-depth look at the challenges, benefits and future of sustainability in the luxury property sector.’’ The Luxury Property Forum

How to Transform a Period Property in London into a Modern Luxury Space

How to Transform a Period Property in London into a Modern Luxury Space

Modern art has become an essential element in luxury interior design, transforming spaces into captivating, personalized sanctuaries. At Supremati, a leading luxury interior design studio based in London, we understand the power of art in defining the character of a home. Incorporating modern art into your interior can elevate your space, blending sophistication, creativity, and individuality.

Why Modern Art Matters in Luxury Interiors

Modern art serves as more than a decorative piece; it’s a statement of style and a reflection of personal taste. For luxury homes, incorporating art is an opportunity to connect contemporary culture with timeless elegance. At Supremati, we expertly curate art pieces that harmonize with bespoke furniture, high-end finishes, and architectural features, creating a seamless flow between art and design.

Tips for Integrating Modern Art into Your Space

1. Choose Art That Resonates with the Space
When selecting modern art for your luxury home, consider the existing design palette. For instance, in our Albion Gate project near Hyde Park, we complemented the space’s art-deco-inspired design with bespoke green and blue undertones, ensuring the art echoed the tranquil surroundings.

2. Make It a Focal Point
Modern art can be the centerpiece of a room, drawing attention and sparking conversation. A large abstract painting in a contemporary open-plan living area can anchor the space, as we’ve done in some of London’s most luxurious apartments.

3. Use Art to Define Spaces
Art can subtly delineate different areas within open-plan designs. For instance, in a luxury London apartment, a sculptural piece can separate the living area from a dining space, while maintaining aesthetic harmony.

4. Experiment with Scale and Texture
Luxury interiors thrive on layering and depth. Incorporate a mix of art styles, such as textured canvases, sleek sculptures, or mixed-media installations, to add dimension. We often combine these elements with bespoke furniture to achieve a cohesive yet dynamic look.

5. Partner with Experts
Curating modern art for luxury interiors requires an eye for detail and an understanding of the client’s vision. At Supremati, we work closely with our clients to source, commission, and position artworks that enhance the beauty and functionality of their space.

The Supremati Approach to Art and Design

At Supremati, we specialize in creating bespoke interiors that seamlessly integrate modern art. Our projects are defined by meticulous craftsmanship, luxurious finishes, and a deep appreciation for artistry. From art-deco influences to contemporary minimalism, we tailor each design to reflect the individuality of our clients.

The Art of Adornment: The Parallel Evolution of Fashion and Interior Design
Magdalena Gruszczynska Magdalena Gruszczynska

The Art of Adornment: The Parallel Evolution of Fashion and Interior Design

Fashion’s history is one of the key notations to observe when considering the pivotal events and shifts that define one generation from the next. It is one of the few elements that evolve dramatically alongside changes in leadership and developments in social and political landscapes. Over the years, dress codes have been suggested and enforced in certain locations for a multitude of reasons, whether cultural, social, or political. In the Western world during the 1800s–1900s, lavish dresses, and immaculate suits were imperative and appropriate attire to be worn when attending Soirées, emulating the luxury and splendour of the room’s adornments. Entire spaces were designed to transform, each dedicated to creating a specific atmosphere or theme that ensured guests felt both comfortable and unified, enhancing the overall ambiance. Decadent styles were social symbols of wealth, status, and prosperity, amplifying the desire to showcase one's good fortune which helped maintain the familiar social class hierarchy. Whilst this is still undoubtedly present in modern cultures, it carried a particular nuance at the time that not only signified the presence of wealth but also power and authority.

Fashion's eccentric influence extended beyond clothing, permeating every aspect of a lifestyle on display. From finely embroidered cotton curtains to the silk pillow casings reclining on a vast bed; taste, and sophistication were at the forefront of upper-class living. Nevertheless, as time went on, fashion became symbolic of the generation you were born into, aligning with musical voices that defined eras, and ultimately shaped the time period into a distinct and discernible image. Alongside this, progressive changes in interior design evolved in parallel with fashion, with the concern for the appearance of one's home no longer exclusive to the rich and famous. Long-standing trends such as DIY and Thrifting remerged, harking back to as early as the 17th century, naturally altering fashion and interior design’s intended trajectory. Vintage clothing and antiquated furniture became part of an individual’s identity, reflecting a renewed appreciation for carefully crafted items, a value that had diminished with the rise of fast fashion and purely functional objects.

A conclusion would reveal that both fashion and interior design have long served as reflections of societal values, political shifts, and cultural evolution. While fashion expresses personal identity and status, interior design transforms entire spaces to mirror these same ideologies, from the opulence of past eras to today’s more accessible trends such as vintage revival. The evolution of both realms showcases an ongoing dialogue between individual tastes and broader social movements. Whether through meticulously curated garments or intricately designed living spaces, fashion and interiors together declare a deeper connection to power, authority, and artistry, shaping the way each generation leaves its mark on history.
